Yan Liangkun was a distinguished Chinese conductor born on Dec 28, 1923, in Wuchang, Hubei province, China. His musical journey began in 1938 when he started his music training under the tutelage of the renowned composer Xian Xinghai. Xian Xinghai was known for his patriotic compositions, and Yan's studies with him significantly influenced his career trajectory. Later, Yan continued his musical education in Chongqing, further honing his skills as a conductor and musician. In 1947, Yan took up a teaching position at a music school in Hong Kong, where he worked as both a conductor and composer.
After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Yan Liangkun moved to Beijing in 1949, where he began teaching at the Central Conservatory of Music. This marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career in Chinese classical music. In 1954, Yan went to Moscow to further his studies in music, which enhanced his understanding and interpretation of Western classical music. Upon his return to China, Yan played a pivotal role in the Chinese music scene, primarily through his work with the Central Philharmonic Society, which later became the China National Symphony Orchestra.
